Middlefork Alternative School

Middlefork is a specialized school in Vermilion County that provides a full spectrum of educational services for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, and other health impairment challenges. Middlefork currently has six classrooms serving forty-plus students. A team-instructional method is used that includes certified special education teachers, classroom aides, counselors, and mentors.

The goal of Middlefork is for students to learn the social and academic skills necessary to be successful in their home school environments. This is accomplished by actively engaging students in a learning process that is hands on, so that students are actively engaged in their own instruction.

While Middlefork includes both traditional academics and social skills application, special emphasis is placed on the process of enhancing a student's positive behaviors. Several methods are employed to accomplish this process. A charting system is used to visually demonstrate appropriate behavior change. Staff members also work to develop a relationship of trust with each student, being unconditionally available to meet students' needs, establishing adherence to school norms with a flexible-with-consistency approach, and instilling a personal goal within each student to earn privileges.
